Best Stylish Ways To Love Yourself

Ah February. The month of love. Red hearts, Valentine’s and Cupid’s little arrow. What better time to love yourself than this? Whether you have a significant other or a loved one to dote upon or not, a little self care and pampering should always be on the menu. We all know that when you take care of yourself first, you’re better able to take care of those around you. Besides, who doesn’t like a little spoiling every now and then.

Whether soaking in a bath, hitting the spa or indulging in your favourite meal is your idea of a little self love, as a personal stylist, mine always involve clothing. If you happen to love style, fashion, shopping or clothes as much as I do, here are five stylish ways to love yourself just a little bit more this month.

1. Dress For Yourself

When it comes to clothing, dress for yourself. By that I mean be 100% true to your style, dress for your particular body shape, in colours that suit your skin tone best.

I’ve worked with a number of women who’ve worn certain things because they thought that they should wear them. Either someone suggested it, they heard that it was the “in” thing or they thought it was appropriate.

Whatever the reason, never ever feel that you need to wear certain items. One of the best things you can do for yourself is to wear pieces that suit and reflect you and who you are.

2. Treat Yourself

Who doesn’t like a little treat or a splurge? If you haven’t in a while, or even if you have, why not treat yourself to a little somethin’ somethin’. Whether it’s a new pair of shoes, a blouse, earrings or a great fitting bra, treat yourself to something that makes you feel special.

While it doesn’t have to be expensive, it does have to be something that makes you look and feel absolutely fabulous. If money’s a little tight at the moment, hit a thrift shop or vintage store, or organize a clothing swap with some friends. Just find some way to give yourself a little pick-me-up.

3. Try Something New

Trying something new is a great way to give yourself a little love. We all get stuck in a rut every once in a while — do things the same way, shop at the same stores, wear the same types of clothes. Why not try shaking things up a bit?

Visit a new boutique, try on a different style of shoe, buy a piece of jewelry you’ve never worn before. Expand yourself. You’ll never know if something will work for you unless you try. Who knows what you could be missing out on.

Just keep one thing in mind — whatever you choose to give a go, make sure it feels right on you. Don’t force it. That would defeat the purpose.

4. Sexy It Up

What girl doesn’t like to feel a little (or a lot) sexy? Maybe not all the time, but here and there, or every so often. All day, every day works too. If you’ve been lacking in the sexy department lately, why not amp it up a bit?

Now, that said, it doesn’t have to be overt. Everyone’s definition of sexy is different. For some, putting on some sexy lingerie does the trick. For others it might be showing a little extra skin, wearing something silky or lacey or putting on a pair of killer heels. The most important thing is that you put on something that makes you feel like the hottest hottie you are.

5. Take Yourself Out

Let’s be honest. You’re too fabulous not to share yourself with the world. Put on your hottest, most stylish outfit, get dressed to the nines, do yourself right up, and take yourself somewhere fabulous. Whether it’s your favourite restaurant, the newest club or a great little cafĂ©, get out there and show yourself off.

A word of caution — heads might turn, cats might call and cars might come to a screeching halt. It’s OK. Let them. Move along, do your thing and keep on keepin’ on, truly and absolutely, loving yourself

Know Spring’s Style Trends Are All About West Coast Cool

I love spring! The colours are brighter and the layers are lighter.

There are so many new styles and trends out this season. Pastels are big, men’s watches are on-point and you can never go wrong with a nude shoe.

To find out the latest trends for spring I spoke to Ashley Goldstein, public relations coordinator at Splendid. Ashley shared all the hot looks for this spring.

What are the new trends for spring casual wear?

This spring we are inspired by the nostalgic feel of sunsets in the marina and weekend getaways to Palm Springs. Spring truly encapsulates the refined casual style of West Coast living. For spring, classic styles are reinvigorated with bold colours and treatments. One of the biggest trends we see right now is blown out plaid and graphic, bold stripes. Stripes go hand and hand with the season, we have really fun spins on a classic stripe this season.

What are some new ways that women are wearing casual wear?

Indigo dyed garments are trending this spring and our innovative indigo washes with vintage-inspired prints give a playful and polished feel to your casual wear. I am seeing classic shirting everywhere and bold colours, variegated stripes and vibrant treatments for a fun twist.

What are the hot colors for spring?

Spring palette is a mix of washed out colours with a pastel beachy feel, anchored with neutral indigo and pops of peachy pink, lime green and limonada.

What are the styles on trend for guy’s this spring?

Hand-dyed pieces are on-trend, to make items look individually distressed. No two pieces look exactly the same! Stripes, stripes, stripes, ombre stripe tees and pullover sweatshirts are going to be everywhere. It is totally about bold stripe trends this spring!

How to care for your casual wear?

Depending on different types of dyes or treatments we do have different recommendations. Personally, I wash my favourite tees on machine wash delicate and hang dry, unless its recommended to dry clean.

Any other tips?

Don’t forget, nothing is more essential in your wardrobe then a classic, basic T-shirt. Soft T-shirts get an update with super-cool spectacle prints, sporty sun-faded stripes and pigment dyes.

If you have been reading my blog, you know that I love simple, effortless style. For accessories this spring, I like classic smaller pieces (in the past seasons we have seen big necklaces but I think those may be on their way out).

Tips to Dressing For Your Body Shape

Out of the many reasons that my clients hire me, wanting to learn how to dress for their body shape is probably at the top of their list. They understand that knowing how to dress for their particular shape is key to looking great. Why? Because it helps create visual balance and harmony. Visual balance and harmony, in turn, pleases the eye. When something is pleasing to the eye, well, it looks good. Really good.

It also saves you time when getting dressed because your closet is only stocked with items perfectly suited to you.

When you know how to dress for your shape, you know how to play up your assets and downplay the areas of your body that you don’t necessarily want to draw attention to. You know how to highlight certain parts, de-emphasize others and fool the eye into believing that you are the epitome of proportion and balance.

It also helps you know which clothing cuts, styles and lengths look best on you, how to wear certain items to suit your body best and how to choose and place accessories to monopolize on the body you’ve got.

Having this knowledge also saves you time and money. Once you know which cuts and styles suit your shape, you know which items to avoid when shopping and which ones to hone in on. You no longer spend money buying things that don’t flatter you and that sit in your closet unworn. It also saves you time when getting dressed because your closet is only stocked with items perfectly suited to you.

If you want to learn how to best dress for your shape, there are a number of different ways to do so. You can hire a stylist like me to help you, you can head over to your local library or bookstore to see what they have available, or you can turn to the internet for a ton of info and tips. You’ll even find online stores dedicated to helping you shop based on your shape. is a Canadian e-boutique founded in Toronto by Chief Stylesmiths, Rena and Mavis. According to Rena, “Smithery makes shopping online easier by offering a simple shape finder tool, modeling the clothes on REAL women representing each body shape, and including customized styling tips to make three outfits from every piece.” is an Australian online store founded by Melbourne-based blogger Larissa Thorne. Larissa states that at Sizeable, “we don’t believe that every woman’s body can really be boiled down to five specific types, instead what we’re trying to do is give women a better idea of what clothes would look like on somebody whose body better resembles their own rather than the standard fit model.”

So if wanting to learn how to dress for your particular body shape is on the top of your list or somewhere further down, there are a number of different options and resources out there for you to do so. If it’s nowhere on your list or even if you don’t have a list, that’s OK. If you ever change your mind, you’ll know exactly where to go
